A visit to VS

Over a year has passed since we last visited VS Fishing Park in Nong Khai. Had it changed much in the meantime? On our last visit we found it rather unkempt and filthy, but how had the fish population developed? In short, the lake and it's banks were as dirty as before, but we were prepared for that so decided to fish anyway.

We'd bought some worms in the morning from one of Udon's tackle shops, and tadpoles and some small walking catfish from a market, in case there were snakeheads to be caught. Also we had the obligatory Farmhouse bread, and bought a bag of sticky rice from the restaurant at VS. Thus equipped, we got our tackle ready, two rods each. I fished one rod with a small lead and a tadpole on the hook, whilst the other was floatfishing a ball of rice in the margins.

I had a few knocks on the float rod, but nothing on the livebait. I changed the tadpole for a catfish, but after another two hours still nothing had happened, so I then cast out a lump of bread.

In the next few hours both of us caught several striped catfish, both on bread and sticky rice. Striped catfish can be caught in most commercial fishing waters and so didn't provide us with much excitement, aspecially as they were all smallish specimens. We didn't catch anything even approaching 10kg.

In the late afternoon, my fishing partner hooked and landed an Indian carp, which was the highlight of the day. Not so great, but this species is generally difficult to catch so we were well pleased.

We will report again on VS the next time we go, but it will probably be in another year.
