Bang Saen 2

Beach life, water sports and floating restaurants in Isaan? Sure! Not so far away and plenty of fun! Looks like the Mediterranean.

Udon-News thanks forum member 'Maithai' for this excellent report!

Location: On Ubolratana (Ubonrat) Dam. From Udon Thani take Highway 2 towards Khon Kaen and drive about 89 km until a right turn at the large for the 2109 road. Carry on for 22.6 km and then turn left onto the 4014. Pass the houses for a few miles, then turn right to find the shore.

Here's the sign to Bang Saen 2. Go down the hill to the parking lot.

Here you can see some restaurants floating on pontoons and built with bamboo. Accessible is via flimsy bamboo bridges, which gives it all a very rustic feel.

Uncomfortably sitting on mats, you can let your mind wander, eat and drink, splash and sleep.

Some groups of Thai students from Khon Kaen were also there, singing to the guitar and drinking Leo. On weekends and public holidays there is certainly a lot going on here - but in the week it is quiet and serene.

If it gets boring then try swimming in the lake. This waterfront is not recommended - rather dirty. But a little further, it looks quite good.

We ate well; typical Isaan food with lots of fish, decently cooked and at moderate prices. The menu is only in Thai.
Our grilled pla nin with vegetables was 200 baht.

Tom yum gung was 150, tempura also 150 baht.

Meanwhile, next to us a Thai family enjoyed themselves. The truck inner-tubes and life jackets can be rented.

Another attraction is the banana boats. The whole banana for up to 6 people costs 300 baht, for 3 circuits ending with a mandatory sharp turn to discard all passengers. Great fun.

In another area, you will find these large pontoon rafts. Larger parties can rent them for several hours. The rafts have their own engines and chug around with their cheerful customers. Dinghies supply whatever food and drink that you'veordered. The rent for the whole raft costs 3000 baht.
Here you can celebrate safely with large parties. Those who want to stay in the resort can find accomodation close by.

So, to end here's a shot of the Ubolratana sunset. Here you can spend a wonderful relaxing afternoon with friends and family.
