Phuwiang Fossil Research Center and Dinosaur Museum

One can hardly believe what the Thais have built here, completely secluded in the woods; the Phuwiang Fossil Dinosaur Museum and Research Center. It cannot be compared with the sorry effort in Nong Bua Lamphu.

Udon-News thanks forum member Maithai for this excellent report.

Where: Tambon Naimueang, Amphoe Wiengkao, Phu Wiang, Thailand.
Tel: 043-438204, 043-438206

It's about 130 km away; drive down the main road 210 to Nong Bua Lamphu, then take the 228 until just after Si Bunrueang, then the 2133 to Phu Wiang. Follow the signs to the Dinosaur Museum - it is located on the access road to the National Park, about 3 kilometers on the left.

This is the unassuming entrance:

You'll get your first impression in the large, tree-covered parking lot.

Currently undergoing a 100,000,000 baht facelift, which should be finished by the middle of next year - here you can see exhibition halls with animated dinosaurs.

Open Tuesday to Sunday 9 am to 5 pm, closed on Mondays.
Admission: Thai adults 20 baht, children 10 baht. Foreign adults 60 baht, children 30 baht.

The exhibition rooms are light and modern, with informative and scientifically correct presentations. There is a plenty to do here, every corner offers new information and interaction.

The entire museum is didactically excellent. The visitor passes through the exhibits of successive geological eras. It starts with the 'Big Bang, the origin of the universe.

Here is a model of the primeval seas, and the first life forms.

Very nice trilobites (arthropods), approximately 250 - 500 million years old.

In the museum there are 21 interactive screens which clearly describe the exhibits.

In this area, the regional archaeological sites at Phu Wiang are described and replicas of artifacts are shown.

The casts are huge - dinosaurs are a big deal in Isaan! In many areas finds have been made and it is very proud of it's historical importance.

One of the major exhibition halls; informative and entertaining - maybe a touch too brash though, but the lessons can be inspiring. In the middle stands a model of a dinosaur skeleton, built in an artistic way and in the original size.

The entire place is not only a museum, but a researched institute too. There are plenty of insights throughout the museum into paleontological theories.

Here you can see the relationship between individual bones and the complete skeleton.

A special section is the dinosaur park has its own environment. Here you can see 3 giant dinosaurs - impressive and not cheesy. This is a Siamthyranus Isanensis!

Also a native: Siamosaurus Suteethorni.

The geological structure and development of Thailand in each era is explained. Rock samples may be touched.

Back to natural resources and the production of fossil fuels.

Outside, in front of the gate, stand these two models (with absolute paleontological accuracy  - Pinkiensis dinosaurs).

Time to go home; even if it is a bit far, I think it's worth it! A nice trip!
