Local flights pick up steam in North

Air traffic at the Chiang Mai international airport is picking up with more flights and passengers expected this month, said Amornrat Chumsai Na Ayutthaya, the airport director. The North's main gateway airport is recovering some of its flight and passenger traffic. On average, the airport received 40 flights carrying about 4,000-5,000 passengers a day last month.

Thailand targeting specific Chinese provinces for “tourism bubble”

Thailand’s minister of tourism and sports says his ministry will target specific provinces in China in a bid to attract tourists back to the resort island of Phuket as travel restrictions are gradually eased. Pipat Ratchakijprakarn says the ministry will not splash out money launching a tourist campaign all across China but rather target some of the many provinces that have brought Covid-19 under control.

Botched Raid in Deep South Left 1 Officer Dead

PATTANI — Police on Friday said a security officer was killed during a search operation in Pattani province. The deceased was identified as a member of the Defense Volunteer Corps paramilitary group. Another corps member and a soldier were also wounded in the gunbattle, which broke out when the officers attempted to raid a house in Panare district.

Domestic flights soar at Chiang Mai airport

CHIANG MAI: The number of domestic flights at Chiang Mai airport has risen more than 50% since Covid-19 restrictions began to be eased. Chiang Mai airport director Amornrak Xumsai Na Ayudhaya said on Thursday that the number of daily flights so far this month has reached 68, up from a daily average of 40 in June.

Planks seized from temple, abbot disappears

KANCHANABURI: More than 500 illegally processed wood planks were seized from a temple in Sai Yok district while the abbot disappeared during a search on Thursday. Pairoj Khiewkaew, head of a forest protection unit in Sai Yok district, on Thursday led a combined team of forestry officials, soldiers, border police and local officials to search Wat Nong Phla Sew in tambon Sri Mongkhol.

2 arrested, 1,420kg crystal meth seized in Narathiwat

NARATHIWAT: Two men have been arrested and 1,420kg of crystal methamphetamine found hidden in a trailer truck in Tak Bai district of Narathiwat in the early hours of Thursday. A combined team of police, soldiers and local officials was dispatched to Padador village in tambon Na Nak of Tak Bai district following information that a large quantity of illicit drugs would be smuggled into this border area.

6 new Covid quarantine cases Thursday

The government on Thursday reported six new coronavirus cases detected in quarantine, taking the country to 38 days without a local transmission, while global Covid-19 cases rose at a record pace. All six new cases were Thai nationals who recently returned from Indonesia, South Africa and Sudan.

Phuket nightlife restarts with a whimper

PHUKET: Entertainment venues on this southern tourist island reopened their doors with little fanfare on Wednesday night after the government further relaxed disease control measures. Provincial authorities inspected Phuket's nightlife area on Soi Bang La during the night, but many premises remained shuttered.

Prayut Defends 223 Billion Baht Defense Budget in Pandemic

BANGKOK — Opposition MPs on Wednesday said the massive defense spending should be slashed and priority given to the economy revival during the coronavirus pandemic. But PM Prayut Chan-ocha, who also serves as defense minister, said the 223.4 billion baht budget is needed to defend the country’s sovereignty. The proposed budget is the fourth highest among the ministries.
